Financial Crisis in the European Union Fails to Remedy Continent

Author Bio: Kevin Craig is a financial writer associated with Oak View Law Group. He has helped many indebted people to get out of debt by giving them proper financial advice for debt settlement.

The state of European economy is not very assuring right now. People are apprehensive to invest as they think that financial crisis in one European country will rapidly spread to other countries of the continent. The current economic instability originated from Greece, a relatively stable nation. The European nations may have to make their business relations stronger with their neighbors in order to overcome this situation.
As the economic year ended in the month of April, Greece witnessed a substantial hike in the interest rates. This had a profound impact on the stock market which collapsed badly. Investors were nervous that many companies will succumb to debt and their money will be lost.
What exactly happened to Greece? It has been actually offering expensive social programs to win the hearts of its citizens. This resulted in a financial deficit. Financial experts were eventually hired to create a smoke screen and reduce the deficit in the budget. It is explicit that Greece tried its best to satisfy the guidelines of the European Union (EU). Since the Greek economy has collapsed, people are not too sure now about the effectiveness of European Union policies. Greece, meanwhile, has turned backed towards its old and very own ways of handling things.
The European Union endeavors to encourage economic fraternity among the countries of the continent. However, this is no mean feat. These countries are not only different in terms of culture but are also highly independent in nature. The European Union members (27 in total) use Euro (as currency) for legal tender. The economic strategies are formulated and implemented from the European Central Bank in Germany. EU has a clear financial policy to control the economy through interest rates. To combat a recession, it proposes lower interest rates to encourage organizations to borrow money and encourage people to buy expensive products. In case of inflation, EU advices to raise interest rates which will reduce the investment and purchasing rate.
In spite of the above policies, EU has negligible power to control and influence the tax and spending plans of the member countries. The policies of EU and its members clash frequently and create a tension which aggravates especially during financial meltdowns. The economically strong countries namely Germany, Italy, France, Britain accuse their financially weak neighbors like Romania, Poland, Slovakia (to name a few) as reckless. Also, they are reluctant to extensively look after the economically weak nations. This creates a tension among the two blocks. Some experts term this as neo cold war. This is a blow to the economic solidarity that EU tries to promote and renders the European economy weaker.
If the dream of European economic unification turns into reality then the collective strength will threaten even the economic might of the US. As of now, the situation looks bleak. The euro seems to have no chance against the dollar, the value of one euro being $1.20. The US economy is not doing well very either. Can Europe surpass it? We are not too sure.

Westboro Baptist Church to Protest at Elizabeth Edwards Funeral

Oh my gosh. Those characters at the cult back in Kansas, known as the Westboro Baptist Church, are in the national spotlight once again. This time, according to multiple news reports,
they plan on picketing the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards. Their website didn't elaborate on what sin Mrs. Edwards supposedly committed, but then again, they probably don't even know themselves.
- Chicago Now
In actuallity, their website accuses her of "spewing blasphemy."
ABC News reported,
The statement claims, among other things, that Edwards refused to pray to God to cure her of cancer.
-ABC News
Why can't they just leave her alone? She put up with her husbands infidelity in their marriage. She suffered a horrible fight (and eventually unsuccessful) with cancer. Why are these people protesting her funeral? Who knows. Like the person in the quoted blog above, I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to wait for the Senators funeral (whenever that may be). Sure, we have all sinned, and come short of the glory of God, but good grief leave the poor woman alone. She's dead, let her family bury her in peace.

I have never understood this group. From the moment they started their protests, I have tried to bring about the true message. They twist the doctrines of the Bible to fit their own perverse message.

One thing, I have discovered. Back home, when I seen them picketing each day, they were always on the high traffic corners. On Sundays, when they were picketing churches, including some very evangelical ones, they were churches on high traffic corners or if they weren't were very large churches that created an unusual amount of traffic for that particular corner. Another words, they are nothing more then publicity hounds. Going out to places where there is a lot of traffic and/or media. That is why, I think that they are going to Elizabeth's funeral. Because of who she is, there will be all kinds of media there. So they traveling across this great country to get in front of all those cameras.

Of course, we live in a free country, and they have the freedom to such protests. No matter how much I or anyone else hates it. However, I believe they committed treason several years ago, when news reports stated they were in Iraq, to be shields for Saddam Hussein, against Americas bombs. But, no charges were ever brought, and that is disgusting. If they hate this country that much, they should leave. Of course what other country, would but up with their hate? What other country would offer them the freedom, that they love to use to show their disrespect for?

With her death, John Edwards becomes the primary caretaker for the younger children. Family friends told ABC News he plans to move back into the 28,000-square-foot mansion the couple had built and once shared.

A Welcome Concession: Obama Proposes Pay Freeze for Healthcare Personnel in VA, Federal Government

In what Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly deemed a political move, President Obama today proposed a pay freeze for health-care personnel in the federal government, to include Veterans Affairs. Because the scheduled pay increases will not be applied retroactively until the economic crises eases, the proposed plan is to save $2 billion in this year alone, $28 billion in the next five years, and $60 billion by 2021.
“In these challenging times, we want the best and the brightest to join and make a difference,” Obama announced. “But these are also time when all of us are called on to make some sacrifices, and I’m asking civil servants to do what they’ve always done—to play their part.”
Singling Out Federal Employees
Connolly (D) was unsure in his interview on Fox News whether the proposal would be beneficial or not, but his statement following the President’s proposal read thusly:
“Make no mistake, reducing the deficit and paying down the debt will not be easy and all Americans, including federal employees, will have to do their part. But a federal pay freeze should only be considered as part of an overall deficit reduction plan. Singling out federal employees in advance of a comprehensive plan is counter-productive and risks leaving Americans with the false impression that federal employee pay raises are a significant contributor to our national debt.”
RNs Take a Blow
Co-president of National Nurses United, Jean Ross, RN (Registered Nurse), was none too pleased, either. She says the freeze “adds salt to an already festering wound of the Obama administration’s failure to support equal rights for VA nurses seeking to improve quality of care standards in VA hospitals and to enhance their standard of living.”
The low standard of living and low-quality work environment is hardly the plight of VA and federal government nurses alone. The global nursing shortage is attributed to lack of funding, stemming from a vast opinion that nurses are non-essential personnel, a job for soft women and the stuff of Halloween costume jokes. Many hospital decision-makers and even doctors disrespect nurses, causing further pay decreases and in many instances miscommunication that can result in patient deaths. With less funding, fewer nurses are expected to do more work, creating a stressful and often semi-abusive work environment; poor pay is a slap in the face. With a nursing shortage, fewer nurse educators exist (can be funded) to teach new nurses, and many qualified applicants are turned away from nursing schools.
Keeping the End in Mind
The proposal would freeze the pay not only of nurses but of doctors and other health-care personnel within the CDC, the National Institutes of Health, the Indian Health Service, and other agencies, including civilian doctors working in the Department of Defense. Uniformed military personnel would be exempt.
Although the move may be political and a concession to Republicans and conservatives wrinkling their noses at federal government employees—who have reputedly been seen to take it easy while the rest of the country tightened their belts—it is not without merits. Many veterans have taken advantage of social media such as Facebook to spread news of their mishaps with health-care personnel within the VA, whom they claim get paid regardless of patient number or conditions, resulting sometimes in substandard treatment and care.
Regardless of what actually goes on behind those pulled curtains, much-needed money will be saved—all $60 billion of it in a paltry 10 years—with this proposal. Moreover, Obama may have won over a few approving nods from red voters. We’ll see how this progresses in Congress over the next few days.
